P90X

Like Jess said the other day.....we're baaaaack!

And what a way to start my re-entry to blogging here than with P90X!

I started P90X on Monday. I was pretty terrified when I started, but I got the program on Craigslist for $45 so I was determined to make the most of my amazing bargain.

I made it through Monday's workout, Chest and Back, without a huge amount of modification. It was  mostly pushups and pullups, neither of which get along with my wimpy arms. Tuesday was Plyometrics, which equated to a lot of jumping around. The impact didn't bother me, but the cardio did. I was spent by  the end and took a bunch of breaks.

I actually really liked the arms and shoulder workout, and I can already see some progress in the 15 minute abs workout they toss in on some days. I obviously have a lot more days and DVDs to get through, but I am really hopefuly I will stick with this.

Has anyone else done P90X? Tell me your experience!

Going for a Run!

Well, I took a completely unecessary 10 DAYS off from running. I am always full of excuses. I ran on May 28, and then it was the weekend so clearly I did not want to run. I planned to run with my dad on Monday, but then silly me, I forgot it was Monday because it was Memorial Day and felt like the weekend. Then, my friend Eric was in town, so we didn’t run on Tuesday either (but we ate crabs, which were DELICIOUS). Then, my dad went away for work on Wednesday until Sunday.

So you can see my excuses building haha. I don’t like working out alone, so I just didn’t run while my dad was away. I told Collin (my boyfriend) last night that he will need to keep me focused on running regularly when I move to Texas with him.

My dad was just getting better from a cold, and it had been 7 days since his last run. We decided to keep it short, doing a route around my parents neighborhood. The distance was almost a mile out, and then obviously the same distance back. Since Dad was still semi-sick and we had been off the running bandwagon, I said that if we wanted to stop short and walk the rest of the way home, we could.

We warmed up by walking and then took off down hill at the end of my parents street. I love that first downhill stretch. Unfortunately, you probably know what that means…..we then have to go up a hill. It’s amazing how much hillier roads seem when you are running as opposed to driving. By the time we turned onto our flat stretch, about .4 in, I could feel how heavy my legs were. Not running for 10 days made me feel like my bones and muscles had been replaced with lead.

We trudged on and came to our second hill. At this point, my dad was ahead of me, but he was able to turn around and yell “Did I ever tell you I hate hills?”

Pretty comical considering the roads surrounding my parents’ house are pretty hilly and we run them, grudgingly, all the time. I hate hills too.

My dad is pretty much a champ and made it back up the hill that we started on. I pretty much always stop at the bottom of the hill.

Question for anyone reading…..I have a tendency to throw up towards the end of my runs. I think it only happens when I try to take the hill at the end. If I finish on the flat part, I feel fine, but as soon as I try to trudge up the hill at a run (ok, slowwww jog), I feel the urge to throw up. I don’t stop running until I start to dry heave. Occasionally I actually throw up, but usually it’s just dry heaving. Any ideas as to why?

I have decided that, barring leg injuries, bad knees, etc. or doctors orders, anyone who says they can’t run is just lazy or not confident. If my dad and I can do it, you can do it. I promise. Like I said, barring injuries and other things like that. When I started this, I literally couldn’t run for 3 minutes. When we got to that part of Couch to 5k (great program, do it!!), I was terrified. When we got up to running in 5 minute increments, with only short spurts of walking, I could hardly do it. But we pushed through, and now I can run for at least 40 minutes. I get bored before I get too tired to stop. Am I a marathoner? Not quite yet. I would like to be able to do a half marathon at some point though. And my dad and I are doing our next 5k on Father’s Day.

So let me be your inspiration. I am not fast. I am not going to win any prizes. But I am doing something I never thought I would be able to do.

Discovery of the Day!

Well, Jess turned me on to this amazing place called StumbleUpon. I encourage you to check it out :)

But, that is not my great discovery of the day. My discovery of the day is....

Homemade ice cream with ONE ingredient and no need for an ice cream maker. I stumbled upon it today!

I found it on thekitchn.com!

Now, if you don't like bananas, then my discovery is wasted on you. However, if you do, pop those suckers in the freezer and then blend them to make a snack that has the consistency of ice cream!

I am super excited about this, because now I feel like I could make myself ice cream without the hassle or a bazillion calories and tons of sugar. I don't know where bananas fall in the caloric food chain, but they have to be better than Ben and Jerry's Phish Food right??

I am ready to go out and by myself some bananas. My concern is ripeness.....what is the perfect ripeness to make this? I am also contemplating adding different things, like the author of the blog mentioned. On my mind? Chocolate chips!

I will let you all know if it is worth trying! I am hoping it will be a perfect summer snack, something cool at the end of the day!

In Memory of Yeardley Love

This is slightly related and slightly unrelated to our blog, but I thought I would use it as a venue to get the word out.

Yeardley Reynolds Love was killed on May 3, 2010, and a fellow UVA student is being charged with her murder. This has been all over the news, so googling Yeardley Love will come up with a ton of hits, if you haven't heard of the case.

I went to high school with Yeardley. We went to a small, private, Catholic all-girls school, so while we were not close friends, we absolutely knew each other. Her death had an enormous impact on our class, our school, and the Baltimore community.

Yeardley loved athletics. She played lacrosse from the time she was a little girl, and also played field hockey. She went to University of Virginia to play lacrosse, as she always dreamed. She probably got a lot more enjoyment out of working out than I do :) The reason I found this appropriate for our blog is because Yeardley was the epitome of healthy living and taking care of the body you have.

In memory of Yards, her family has set up a fund in her honor to build a new turf field at our high school, since Yeardley's passion was athletics and she loved Notre Dame. Anyone interested in making a donation to the Yeardley Love Memorial Field fund can go here to find out more information.

Also, I received word from a close friend of Yeardley's today that they are selling "ONE LOVE" t-shirts for $25 to benefit the Yeardley Love Memorial Field fund. Anyone interested can contact me.

Yeardley has a beautiful soul and did not deserve what happened to her. However, her memory will live on at Notre Dame Prep and in the hearts of those who knew her.

Yo-yoooooo!

Hi, my name is Abby, and I am a yo-yo exerciser.

Insert: Hi Abbyyyyy.

But seriously. I get on these kicks, where I decide to exercise like a crazy person and do all of this great stuff at the gym. In high school, I used to swim on a regular basis. Last year, I started doing Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred dvd. For a week, Collin and I hit the gym. I pay $25 a month to belong to a gym.

And then I get bored (i.e. lazy).

I also realized I require a workout buddy. It must be genetic, because I got a call from my mom today asking me to go walk with her. I usually run a few miles with my dad 3 times a week and my mom walks with my dad several mornings a week.

Guess what happened this week? My dad is out of town. And neither my mom nor I are working out.

So, in this first blog entry, I admit my faults. I am a yo-yo exerciser. However, I will be making strides to become more consistent in order to lose weight, tone up my body, and overall feel healthier. On my 101 in 1001 list, I have ambitions of completing 3 more 5ks, a 10k, and a mini-triathlon before September 2012, so I am going to have to stay on target. If you have any suggestions, I am always open! And feel free to comment :)

Abby

Hi all, my name is Abby. I am a native Marylander, as is my whole family, so it took a lot of guts to embark on this crazy military ride with my handsome pilot, Collin. I’m a girl who thoroughly enjoys the results of working out and eating right, but hates the process of getting there, and it doesn’t help that I lack self-control.

I currently weigh 175 and my ultimate goal is to lose 15 pounds. I’ve recently started running and I average about 6-10 miles per week; however, running has taken its toll on my back, so I need to focus on other exercises I can do in addition to running so I can strengthen my core muscles. I also want to focus on preparing meals and eating right. Cooking for one is tough, so I tend to eat out a lot.

Anyway, if you are reading this, I appreciate you coming to the blog and I hope you will help all of us along on our journey, whether you know us or not. And feel free to take anything you learn here and apply it to your life, after all, we all have the right to bare arms!
